A full-scale in situ heating test in Callovo-Oxfordian claystone: observations, analysis and interpretation

The paper describes the performance, observations and numerical interpretation of a full-scale in situ heating test conducted on Callovo-Oxfordian (COx) claystone Meuse / Haute-Marne (MHM) Underground Research Laboratory (URL) simulating heat-emitting, high-level radioactive waste disposal concept. In experiment, five heaters 3 m-long are placed axis microtunnel excavated COx to simulate heat production waste. is fully instrumented, attention focused near-field region's thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) behaviour consisting casing surrounding heater host formation (COx claystone). assisted by performance analysis based coupled formulation incorporating relevant THM phenomena. calculations have used constitutive law especially developed for this type material. Initial boundary conditions as well material parameters determined from comprehensive field laboratory experimental programme. presents discusses thermal, hydraulic mechanical claystone, an annular air-filled gap between casing.
